Can you believe it is day three of NAIDOC week? To celebrate today I will share with you the Aboriginal language map…(you can find: interactive map here and downloadable map click here).
How amazing is that? Over 250+ languages with 600+ dialects (slightly different but distinct versions of the language)!
I hope that you have seen it this map in school before. If not, I challenge you to show it to your SOSE/S&E/Humanities teacher so that they can use it from now onwards when they are teaching Australian History.
I am from the Jaru/Kija mob of Halls Creek in the Kimberley at the top of Western Australia. I also have family from the NT border. Our book Black Cockatoo is due to be released in 2018 by Magabala Books and has many Jaru words and a glossary at the back to help you learn and understand the words of my area.
Our languages matter: Diverse, loud and proud!
Can you find your mob on this map? What words do you know or wish you knew from your area?
