Black Cockatoo and the ABiA Awards

March 9, 2019

Could we be any more amazed that Black Cockatoo (Magabala 2018) has been listed in contention for another award this year? We are overwhelmed with the positive recognition for our debut book. Who would ever have guessed that a little story about bush life in the Kimberley (written so young people in the Kimberley could have a short accessible book about their lives and stories) would have reached and appealed to such a large, broader audience?

So far we have made the longlist for the 2019 Small Publisher Children’s Book of the Year. It’s the most surreal thing to have your book listed amongst some of the authors that you admire so much!

Again we will have to wait to see if we move forward to the shortlist on the 11th of April and who the major winner will be come May 2nd.

We must say a huge thank-you to our publisher, Magabala Books, and the team especially Rachel, Lisa and Caitlyn. A big thank-you to our illustrator, Dub Leffler. A heartfelt thanks to our editor, Shel Sweeney, from A Worded Life. As well as everyone who has supported and championed our book. Also a huge thank you to the ABiA panel and sponsors of the award.
